German authorities have revealed that a Moroccan wedding, that took place on August 15, triggered a coronavirus hotspot in Wiesbaden, in the western German state of Hesse.

«After the rules of physical distancing between guests were ignored, dozens of people were infected with the coronavirus in Wiesbaden, prompting authorities to toughen containment measures in the city», wrote Deutsche Welle (DW).

Thus, the couple of Moroccan origin held their wedding ceremony in the neighboring city of Mainz, without knowing that one of the 100 guests that attended the wedding tested positive for the coronavirus.

The number of people infected so far has reached more than 30, according to the head of the health office in Wiesbaden. In a press conference held on Wednesday, the official added that the problem is that the party included many families and children, which increases the number of contact cases. She said she expects the number of people infected to increase dramatically as well.

Local media said the health office was also unable to identify all contacts. The list of guests was handed to the authorities only after several days.

This is not the first time that a party turn into a coronavirus drama in Germany. DW recalls that a Turkish wedding in the city of Kielstbach (southwest of Frankfurt) led to dozens of cases of coronavirus.
