MEPs warned on Friday against «the situation of Hirak prisoners amid the COVID-19 crisis». In a letter sent to the head of government Saadeddine El Othmani, MEPs recalled that «many» Hirak detainees «remain in closed and densely overcrowded prisons where they are exposed to an acute risk of contamination, generally not having access to adequate health care».

«The physical condition of several Hirak prisoners is seriously weakened by intermittent hunger strikes. We remain particularly concerned about the situation of Nabil Ahamjik and Nasser Zefzafi, held in solitary confinement and on hunger strike since August 14; Mohamed Haki, Bikal Ahabad and Zakaria Adahchour, who are also on hunger strike; Achraf Moudid, whose health situation is complicated due to a recent suicide attempt», they stressed.

The letter calls on the head of government to «prioritize humanitarian considerations and release all Hirak prisoners, in accordance with the recommendations made by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights».

«The recent release of a number of Hirak prisoners in recent weeks is a positive first step towards the release of all prisoners», concludes the letter signed by 20 MEPs.
