A British shopkeeper was sentenced to eight months in prison for attempting to smuggle 49 stolen mobile phones into Morocco. The 59-year-old man was stopped at the Manchester Airport in November 2019 as he was travelling to Morocco to sell the devices.

According to local media, 49 of the 71 mobile phones he was carrying that day were stolen or lost. The same man owned a shop in Bolton and purchased the devices to sell them in Morocco.

The man said he «rarely purchased second hand phones but when he did he would check they weren't stolen but hadn't done so on this occasion». He pleaded guilty to dishonesty and receiving stolen goods, the same source added.

Seven years ago, the same man appeared in news with officers who «were launching a clampdown on stolen mobiles being bought and sold on in shops».
