Moroccan members of the Karkariya order, a Sufi Tariqa led by Sheikh Mohamed Fawzi al-Karkary, have been at the heart of a new controversy that involves the Egyptian factions.
It all started with an article published by Egyptian newspaper Dostor, in which a certain Hussein al-Karkary claimed to be «the sheikh» of the brotherhood, accusing Mohamed Fawzi al-Karkary of being «self-proclaimed overnight as the order’s Sheikh, without seeking or inquiring if there is a Tariqa with the same name and adopting the same doctrine».
«The Egyptian Tariqa that I have been running since the death of my father, Sheikh Rifai al-Karkary, exists in Egypt and has been based in Embabeh for 30 years, that is to say it is older than the Moroccan Tariqa led by Sheikh Fawzi al-Karkary», he told said newspaper. He added that his father had «obtained permission to establish the Egyptian order Karkary from the Moroccan founder of the brotherhood, Sheikh Taher al-Karkary, before his death».
«The establishment of any Sufi order is permitted by the sheikh of the order who founded it so that success is his ally and that there is no violation of the morals of the Sufi way», he said. However, he criticized the Moroccan Tariqa, referring to the «official legitimacy of its creation».
The Egyptian Hussein al-Karkary thus asked the Sufi orders and his Supreme Council to recognize the Egyptian Tariqa Karkariya to «prevent Moroccan Fawzi al-Karkary from presenting himself as the official sheikh of the Tariqa». He thus accused him of having «insulted the Sufi order» and «introduced strange rituals to it, such as patchwork clothing».
Moroccan followers of Karkariya respond
Speaking to Yabiladi on Monday, Said Menouach al-Karkary, one of the members of the Moroccan Tariqa, denied the statements of the Egyptian sheikh. «The sheikh of Tariqa Karkariya is Sidi Mohamed Fawzi al-Karkary and this man has nothing to do with our order», he argued. He further explained that the Sheikh of the Tariqa «is a descendant of Sheikh Al-Hassan Ibn Ali, God bless him».
«I ask this Egyptian, who claims to be a sheikh, to stop lying.Sheikh Mohamed Fawzi al-Karkary is the founder of the Tariqa Karkariya in Morocco.There is even an Egyptian branch of our brotherhood.These intruders want to use the name of the order and its sheikh».
Regarding the possibility of an official response from the Moroccan sheikh to the Egyptian sheikh, our interlocutor said that «it is not part of the habits of the Tariqa or its branches to respond to these people». «We believe that spreading love, peace and harmony is better», he said.
The Moroccan Tariqa Karkariya is affiliated with Mohamed Fawzi al-Karkary and is based in the town of Al Aaroui, on the outskirts of Nador. It is presented, according to its leaders, as a Tariqa inspired by the Sunnah of the Prophet «in words, actions and behavior».
