French-Moroccan director Izza Génini is participating in the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival (BFMAF). The sixteenth edition is held online from September 17 to October 11, due to the pandemic.
This remote participation is scheduled for a live event on October 6, according to organizers and the Moroccan Embassy in the UK. During this meeting, Izza Génini will present four short films, as part of the Filmmaker in Focus program. These films are «Vibrations in the High Atlas», «Rhythms of Marrakech», «Return to Ouled Moumen» and «Aïta».
The pioneer of documentary cinema will discuss her work with the writer and artistic curator Omar Berrada, the filmmaker and writer Yasmine Benabdallah as well as her colleague Myriam Mouflih, member of the festival's programming.
Izza Génini was born in Casablanca, in 1942, before moving to France with her parents in the 1960s. She first studied literature and foreign languages at the Sorbonne University and at the School of Studies.
Her works have often tackled artistic, cultural and especially musical themes, through an analysis of the different facets of Moroccan heritage, its social and religious influences and those linked to the country's multiple identities.
