The Tarajal center, set up by the authorities in Ceuta to accommodate Moroccans who have been stranded in the city since the start of the pandemic, closed on Tuesday.
Officially, «the government of Ceuta chaired by Juan Vivas (PP) has closed the facility» to disinfect and clean it «and will now use it to isolate» irregular immigrants who arrive in the autonomous city and must remain quarantined, OK Diario reports.
The closure, however, is seen as a response to a group of Moroccans who refused to be repatriated and protested against that on Tuesday, El Faro de Ceuta wrote. «The closure took many of them by surprise», it added.
«We just want a roof over our heads and food to survive. They threw us outside and we have nowhere to sleep», one of the Moroccans said. On Monday, they demonstrated inside the Tarajal reception center.
Since March 13, Ceuta has accommodated and fed 368 Moroccan nationals, OK Diario recalls, adding that it spent 842,000 euros on that.
For the record, a series of repatriation operations were organized jointly by the Spanish and Moroccan authorities this month, bringing home Moroccans stranded in the city home.
