In a letter sent to the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the Security Council, Russian Ambassador Vassili Nebenzia, the Polisario Front criticized the latest UN report on Western Sahara on Tuesday.

According to the letter publsihed the Polisario press agency, the Secretary General of the Front, Brahim Ghali believes that the report «does not reflect the reality of the alarming situation in Western Sahara». The Polisario «does not share the assessment of the Secretary General of the general situation in the region and the Guerguerate zone, described as calm», the letter read.

In his letter, the leader of the separatist movement criticized the MINURSO mission, claiming that it «failed to implement the mandate for which it was established under Security Council resolution 690 (1991) and become a passive spectator of the expansionist actions of Morocco».

The letter also denounced alleged «violations» of human rights in the Sahara by Morocco, urging the UN to «extend the mandate of the MINURSO mission to human rights».

On the other hand, Brahim Ghali called on the United Nations to «immediately close» the Guerguerate border crossing.

In his report published a few days ago, the UN Secretary General listed «a significant increase in violations by the Polisario Front» and «incursions by the Polisario Front into the buffer zone».

The report presented to members of the UN Security Council also mentions the transfer of several Polisario units to Tifariti in December 2019 and April and May 2020, which «constitutes a violation of military agreement No. 1».
