On Sunday, 1st of April, permanent representative of Morocco to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Hilale in a letter sent to president of the Security Council, Gustavo Meza-Cuadra, warned against the situation in the buffer zone.
Once again, the Polisario is sending its armed elements to the buffer zone. The separatist movement is now present in four buffer zones, namely Mahbes, Tifarity, Gueguerate and Bir Lahlou, breaking the arrangement set up in 1976 under the auspices of the United Nations.
The Polisario recently announced that it is moving its «Defense Ministry» to the Bir Lahlou buffer zone, near the Mauritanian borders. The decision is part of a project to which Algeria would contribute to.
Competitors participating to the Africa Eco Race have managed to cross the buffer zone separating Morocco and Mauritania. And despite the Polisario’s threats, the Monaco-Dakar rally headed on Monday to its final destination in Senegal without encountering any problems.
