On Sunday, the Mauritanian electoral commission announced that Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has won presidential election with an absolute majority. Speaking to Yabiladi, politicial analysts from Nouakchott said that they expect the new president to learn from his predecessor’s mistake and strengthen ties with the Kingdom.
Last week, Mauritania’s former Defense Minister Mohamed Ould Ghazouani said that if elected president of the country he would stop granting Mauritanian citizenship to Sahrawis from Tindouf. Ould Ghazouani’s statement was denounced by the Front which sent a delegation to meet officials from Nouakchott.
Speaking during an election rally, Wednesday, Mauritania’s former Defence Minister Mohamed Ould Ghazounai said that he is against the idea of granting Mauritanian citizenship to Sahrawis from the Tindouf camps. Ould Ghazouani is running for presidential elections, scheduled for June 22.
Mauritania President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is establishing a solid groundwork for his successor. He announced that not running for a third term does not mean he is retiring from politics.
