The process of regularizing undocumented migrants in Spain has created a new reality for Moroccan consulates, which are now facing a surge of citizens in a short period of time. This has required the adoption of exceptional measures to ensure service continuity and prevent disruptions.
Following the integration of Saharan representatives in negotiations with the United Nations and the European Union, Morocco is strategically positioning this region as a vital crossroads in its African diplomatic policy.
While it was accused of imposing a «fait accompli» policy in the province, Morocco sees in the opening of several consulates in the Sahara a new strategy that normalizes the country’s sovereignty on the territory. This strategy is expected to make of the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla political and economic hubs.
