Footballer Munir Haddadi still cannot play for the Morocco national football team. On Thursday, FIFA rejected a request from the Royal Moroccan Federation to let Haddadi switch nationality from Spain.

«For the Player's Status Commission, this rejection dictated by one of the clauses of the new statute concerning his participation in the under-21 category, in particular during three matches with the Spanish U21 selection when he was two months older», FIFA wrote in a statement.

«This decision is not motivated by the participation of El Haddadi in the Spanish selection A», it added. Haddadi played a single game for the Spanish senior national team.

«After discussions between the FRMF and FIFA, the FRMF decided to appeal this emergency decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).As for FIFA, it has approved that players Ayman Barkok and Samy Mmaee wear the Moroccan national colors».

For the record, El Haddadi’s request to switch allegiance has already been refused in the past. However, FIFA eased its eligibility rules last month.

A few hours before the FIFA’s decision, in an interview with the Qatari channel BeIN Sports, Munir Haddadi said he was «very happy» to play for Morocco and «confident» to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
