Moroccan Soumia Amrani was elected on Monday to the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), said a statement issued by the ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad.
The election took place in New York, on the occasion of the 13th Meeting of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the ministry added, noting that the candidacy of Amrani, who enjoyed great diplomatic mobilization, won the support of 103 countries.
Soumia Amrani is known for her work and her commitment to several national and international associations and institutions for the defense of the rights of persons with disabilities.
Founding President of the Autism Morocco Collective, Amrani has also served as a member of the National Human Rights Council and Vice-President of the Collective for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
According to the same source, 27 other candidates were competing for the 9 vacant posts within the CRPD.
The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is the body of independent experts which monitors implementation of the Convention by the States Parties.
