The Mauritanian army is expected to launch a series of military exercises in mid-March, local newspaper Sahara Médias reported. They will take place in the wilaya of Tiris Zemmour, located in northern Mauritania near the border with Morocco and Algeria.

The area is also known for being the main way for the population of the Tindouf camps when heading to Mauritania.

These maneuvers come almost two months after the adoption by the Council of Ministers chaired by Head of State Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani of a bill providing for the creation of a «sensitive defense zone» in the north of the country.

For the record, this decision was followed three weeks later by rocket fire from the Polisario in the direction of Guerguerate on January 23.
