The food waste index for 2021, published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), reports that 3.3 million tonnes of food in Morocco has ended up in waste in 2019.
The report pointed out that the per capita share of Moroccan food waste per year reaches 91 kilograms, which remains the same as in Algeria, Egypt and Tunisia. This waste is however less significant in Libya, where it reaches 76 kilograms.
Globally, the report confirmed that approximately 931 million tonnes of food, or 17% of the total food available to consumers in 2019, ended up in household trashcans, retailers, restaurants and other catering services. The weight of this waste is equivalent to nearly 23 million fully loaded trucks.
The report shows that most of this waste comes from households, which dispose of 11% of the total food available at the consumption stage. Foodservices and outlets waste 5% and 2% respectively. Globally per capita, 121 kg of food is wasted at the consumer level each year on average.
The report recalls that food waste has significant environmental, social and economic impacts.
