Spanish far-left Podemos party in the Canary Islands denounced, this week, a joint military exercise led by Morocco and the United States that took place near the archipelago. In a statement echoed by El Diario, the party’s representative in Tenerife, David Carballo criticized «unexpected actions» carried out by the two countries.
The politician also underlined that these actions «coincide with one of the tensest moments in relations between Spain and Morocco in recent years due, among other things, to the migration crisis». These actions «are intended as a new attempt by Morocco to continue to pressure Spain to give in in favor of its interests», he added.
David Carballo also cited the Sahara dossier, accusing Morocco of having «initiated» a military conflict «against the Polisario Front, with a desire for territorial expansion over Western Sahara». In this sense, he criticized Morocco saying the country intends «to annex the Spanish waters located in the Canary Islands».
The intervention was also an opportunity for the elected Podemos to criticize the American decision to recognize the sovereignty of Morocco over the Sahara. «The American administration of Biden continues one of the last and fateful policies of Donald Trump, by recognizing the alleged sovereignty of Morocco over Western Sahara, whereas the new government should have annulled this decision», he lambasted .
