Tarawih prayers at the heart of several protests across Morocco

Young Moroccans continue to challenge the authorities in several cities, performing Tarawih prayers outside mosque doors or demonstrating against the nighttime curfew during the month of Ramadan.

Voices calling for the reopening of mosques during nighttime to perform Tarawih prayers have continued. Due the nighttime curfew, implemented by the authorities during the month of Ramadan to avoid the spread of the coronavirus, worshipers are prevented from praying outside starting 8 pm.

Despite the ban, local authorities in the city of Tangier dispersed, Sunday evening, a group of young men who took to the streets to perform Tarawih prayers, violating the nighttime curfew. Well-informed sources said that 20 young people gathered outside a mosque in Casabarata to perform Tarawih prayers when the police intervened.

Since the start of the holy month, the police have arrested «dozens of people for violating the state of health emergency, after having performed Tarawih outside or in front of closed mosques», the same source added.

Demonstrations in Essaouira and Tarawih accomplished in Fez

In Essaouira, the local authorities were more severe, Sunday evening, with a group of people who were outside after 8 pm. According to local media, the protesters chanted slogans like «the people want to perform Tarawih's prayers». Elements of the auxiliary forces, in coordination with the judicial police, arrested a large number of people.

Sunday in Fez, authorities prevented the holding of Al Icha and Tarawih prayers in a mosque in the Zouagha district. Media sources explained that local authorities arrested the imam of the «Ahl Allah» mosque who was leading prayers in front of the mosque. 

The same sources specified that the inhabitants of Zouagha have succeeded in performing the two prayers for four successive days since the start of the holy month. The population organized a demonstration on Sunday to call for the release of those arrested for violating night curfew.

Since the evening of the first day of Ramadan, residents had organized protest marches, demanding the reopening of places of worship, in Tangier and M'Diq in particular. Demonstrations that have drawn the support of several officials of Al Adl wal Ihsane, like Mohamed Hamdaoui, member of the guidance council, Boubker Elouenkhari, secretary general of the movement's youth or even Hassan Bennajeh.
