After Algeria, the Biden administration sends diplomat to Morocco

After Algeria, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary for North Africa Joshua Harris is visiting Morocco on December 17 and 18. In Rabat, the American diplomat is expected to «consult on further strengthening the U.S.-Morocco partnership and to review a range of regional security priorities, including events in Gaza and the UN process on Western Sahara», the US Department of State said in a statement published Saturday on X, Twitter formerly.

Harris is also expected to «reiterate there is no change in the clear and consistent US position» on the Sahara. «The United States fully supports UN Personal Envoy de Mistura in facilitating the negotiations process to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution for Western Sahara. The United States believes a negotiated political solution should be realized without further delay», reads the same statement.

«The United States continues to view Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal as serious, credible and realistic, and one potential approach to satisfy the aspirations of the people of Western Sahara».

Joshua Harris met, on December 8 in Algiers, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf. The American diplomat met in September in Rabat, during his first tour in the region, with the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
