National coach Walid Regragui assured that the Atlas Lions' 3-0 victory over Tanzania in their first 2023 Africa cup of Nations (Afcon) match is «beneficial for a good start to the competition».

«The first match is always difficult», Regragui admitted in a post-match press conference. «We were lucky to be the last group to play and managed to control the match. It's good for entering the competition».

Addressing the physical challenges and upcoming games, he added: «It was tough physically, but the players adapted. We have to take it match by match. Now, we're focused on the DR Congo match. Playing at 2 pm will be difficult, but we'll manage».

Regragui commended the players' performance: «I'm happy with them. In Africa, we fight the opponent and the climate. This tournament is won on the bench and in managing key moments».

Man of the match Azzedine Ounahi emphasized the importance of the win: «In the Africa Cup of Nations, there are no small teams. Big teams struggle too. We were well focused throughout the game».

Optimistic about Morocco's potential, the Olympique de Marseille midfielder said: «Our squad can go far. I'm regaining my rhythm after my back injury and happy with this victory. We have three days to recover and be at our best for the next match».

The second group match of the first day saw DR Congo draw 1-1 with Zambia.
