The second edition of the Marrakech African Book Festival (FLAM) opened its doors on Thursday at the «Les étoiles de Jemâa El Fna» center. Distinguished guests from the art, culture, and literature spheres, including both Moroccans and international figures from Africa, joined the vibrant gathering.

Created by writer and visual artist Mahi Binebine, journalist Fatimata Wane-Sagna, academic Hanane Essaydi, and cultural entrepreneur Younès Ajarraï, FLAM serves as a vibrant platform for African literature and culture. Supported by the «We Art africains» association, the festival provides a free and accessible venue for all ages and backgrounds to engage with literature and art.

Running until February 11th, FLAM aims to make cultural experiences accessible to all, bridging the gap between established professionals and everyday citizens. General delegate Younès Ajarraï emphasized the festival's goal of fostering connections and intellectual exchanges between diverse voices from across the African continent and its diaspora.

This year's edition particularly focuses on amplifying the voices of young Moroccan writers, incorporating programming that resonates with the local Marrakech audience.

A key highlight of the first session was the «Palabres» debate, focusing on the complex relationship between «Religions, spirituality and politics in Africa». Led by Souleymane Bachir Diagne, Sophie Bessis, and Bariza Khiari, the discussion highlighted the inherently human and humanistic nature of religion, emphasizing its potential for fostering shared understanding and encounter rather than conflict.
