From February 26 to March 1, Alexander Ivanko, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Western Sahara and head of MINURSO, held meetings with ambassadors accredited to Morocco in Rabat.
Ivanko met with representatives from key countries including the United States, Russia, France, China, the United Kingdom, and Spain. The discussions focused on the recent developments concerning the Western Sahara question. He also held separate meetings with Moroccan officials, a well-informed source told Yabiladi.
The UN envoy additionally met with the ambassadors of Norway, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, and Switzerland, the same source added. This visit follows his November 2023 meeting with European ambassadors in Rabat, which occurred shortly after the Polisario attacks on civilian targets in Es-Smara on October 28 and November 5.
It's worth noting that UN Security Council Resolution 2703, adopted in October 2023, acknowledged the valuable role played by MINURSO on the ground and emphasized the need for the mission to ensure the safe and regular resupply of its bases in order to carry out patrols throughout its area of responsibility.
