The Casablanca court of First Instance prosecutor has decided to prosecute Moroccan radio host Mohamed Bousfiha, also known by his stage name «Momo», under provisional release and with a 100,000-dirham bail. The Hit Radio host is facing charges of «participating in broadcasting false information». Two other suspects are detained at the Ain Sebaa prison on charges of «fabricating a crime».
Last weekend, Casablanca's Judicial Police launched an investigation under the supervision of the public prosecutor. The probe aimed to identify those involved in fabricating a crime, spreading misinformation online, and insulting an organized body.
A security source revealed that Casablanca's security services took a phone call to a private radio station very seriously. The caller reported a fictitious theft and alleged inaction by security services. This was initially treated as a real crime, prompting an investigation to apprehend suspects and determine legal responsibilities.
A fake theft to reportedly boost audience
Investigations, conducted in collaboration with Territorial Surveillance services, revealed the caller used a false identity, fabricated a theft with the help of an accomplice, never visited any security authority premises, and made the call for personal gain and to boost the radio station's audience.
Further investigations led to the arrest of the second individual involved in these acts that disrupt public security and tranquility, police said in a statement. This individual reportedly has a history of similar offences.
The Judicial Police Department, under the Public Prosecutor's supervision, maintains its investigation. Digital forensics are being conducted to determine if there was prior incitement or coordination between the suspects and the radio program that broadcasted the call, potentially constituting grounds for additional criminal charges.
