The Ministry of Economy and Finance's Directorate of Competition, Prices, and Compensation announced in a statement published on May 19 that the government is implementing a «removal of the butane gas subsidy». This decision will take effect on Monday, May 20, and will result in «an increase of 2.5 dirhams in the price of a 3 kg gas bottle and 10 dirhams for a 12 kg bottle».
The government justifies this change as part of a broader reform to streamline social assistance. This includes the «direct social assistance program» (supporting 3.6 million families as of April 2024) which uses a unified social register to better target aid to those who need it most.
The increase was included in the 2024 Finance Law, approved by both chambers of the Moroccan Parliament. As a reminder, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch had previously announced the upcoming price hike before Parliament.
