On May 26 and 27, Algiers will host a new session of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU). Morocco is represented by a delegation led by Sahrawi Mohamed Sibari (PAM), first vice-president of the House of Representatives and deputy of the Guelmim constituency.
Cheikh Ahmadou Adabda, a Sahrawi parliamentary advisor (PAM) from the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region and member of the Lajreifa commune in Boujdour, is also part of the Moroccan delegation.
Since February 2022, Adabda has served as rapporteur of the Committee on Political Affairs and Parliamentary Relations within the AIPU. Notably, he was the first Sahrawi elected to such a position in this Arab League legislative body.
While Arab gatherings are not necessarily platforms for Morocco and Algeria to directly address the Sahara issue, the presence of Sahrawi representatives in the Moroccan delegation is likely to strengthen the kingdom's positions on this issue during closed-door meetings or sideline discussions at the congress.
It's worth noting that the Moroccan delegation at the recent United Nations Committee of 24 meetings, held in Caracas from May 14 to 16, also included two Sahrawi elected officials: M'hamed Abba, member of the Laayoune Sakia El Hamra Regional Council, and Ms. Ghalla Bahiyya of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Regional Council.
