The death toll from the methanol poisoning incident in Sidi Allal El Tazi commune (Kenitra region) has reached eight, reported the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection in Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region on Wednesday.
«Between 6 pm on Monday, June 3 and 8 am on Wednesday, June 05, 2024, 114 cases of methanol poisoning were confirmed in the commune», the directorate said in a statement, citing the Moroccan Center for Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance in Rabat.
The ingestion of methanol caused severe complications, «resulting in the death of eight people, seven at the Idrissi Regional Hospital Center in Kenitra and one at the Zoubir Skirraj Hospital in Souk Larbaa».
As soon as it was notified of this tragic incident, the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection mobilized its medical staff and resources to provide care to the injured. This included cooperation with various authorities and healthcare teams who were put on high alert.
81 other patients remain hospitalized across the region. This includes 28 at the Kenitra Regional Hospital Center, 3 requiring intensive care. 38 patients have been discharged after improvement. The Rabat Regional Center is treating 40 patients, including 2 in intensive care. Additionally, 20 patients undergo blood purification at the Ibn Sina University Hospital due to complications.
The directorate allocated resources to receive new arrivals and coordinated with local authorities to find other potential cases. They urge citizens in the Kenitra region to report any similar cases and seek immediate medical attention to avoid complications.
