Following the debacle of her far-left coalition in the European elections on June 9, Spanish politician Yolanda Diaz announced her resignation as coordinator of Sumar. «I have decided to step out of my position as coordinator of Sumar. The citizens have spoken and I am taking the consequences. It is necessary to open a debate» within her formation, launched in 2023 by twenty small parties, she declared.
For the moment, Diaz has not announced her departure from the Spanish government, where she holds the position as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Economy. The leadership of Sumar is expected to meet in the coming days to appoint a new coordinator.
Yolanda Diaz is an ardent supporter of the Polisario. She had openly condemned Pedro Sanchez's support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara, expressed in March 2022.
During the campaign for the early legislative elections of July 23, 2023, she even declared that «Morocco is a dictatorship». In October 2023, the politician stopped publicly backing the Polisario. This change happened when she made a deal with the PSOE party to join the government that Pedro Sanchez was forming at that time.
In the European elections of June 9, Sumar secured only three seats.
