Nearly complete, the Complementary Program for the Rehabilitation and Enhancement of Essaouira's Old Medina (2019-2023) boasts a 95% progress rate, according to data presented at a meeting of the Ad-hoc Provincial Steering Committee on Thursday.
The meeting, attended by provincial authorities and key stakeholders, reviewed achievements, ongoing work, and the project's future outlook. Provincial governor Adil El Maliki emphasized the program's importance in preserving Essaouira's heritage, improving living conditions, and boosting tourism. He noted the project's near completion, with final touches underway on the seafront, public spaces, vulnerable housing, and urban facilities.
Abdessamad Ennouhi, Director of the Al Omrane Essaouira-Chichaoua agency, presented a detailed program assessment. The ambitious project, with a budget of 300 million dirhams, comprises 27 projects focused on four key areas: urban space rehabilitation, historical heritage restoration, social service access promotion, and strengthening Essaouira's old medina's tourist and economic appeal.
Ennouhi highlighted the program's collaborative approach, with 170 public-public partnership agreements signed. He reported significant progress, rising from 89% at the previous meeting to 95% currently. Fifteen projects are completed, and the remaining 12 are nearing completion, with six in the final stages (60-80% progress). These final stages include a Welcome Center, Place du Mellah development, a House for the Elderly, a youth center, a women's home, and a daycare.
This rehabilitation project benefits the medina's 13,000 residents through various initiatives: public square development, alleyway improvements, places of worship restoration, health and preschool centers, historic square rehabilitation (Squala du Port), and parking lot creation.
