For the second consecutive month, Moroccan nationals represent the largest group of foreign workers contributing to Spain's social security system, according to figures released on Tuesday by the Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.
Moroccans now top the list with 358,371 affiliates, nearly 11,500 more than April. Romanians follow closely with 351,890 contributors, then Colombians (205,890), Italians (194,182), Venezuelans (157,784), and Chinese (157,784).
The number of foreign social security affiliates reached a record high of 2,882,967, a jump of 77,912 in May alone. This number has risen by a significant 627,864 since December 2019, pre-pandemic.
Of the total, 925,282 (32.1%) are from EU countries, while 1,957,685 (67.9%) come from non-EU nations. The system has also seen a notable influx of Ukrainian workers, with their numbers rising to 70,675 by May, a 49.5% increase since January 2022, before the war.
The workforce is divided nearly equally, with almost 1.6 million men and over 1.3 million women.
