Representatives from Morocco and the United States met in Washington on Monday to discuss the implementation of the free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries. The 8th session of the joint committee tasked with monitoring the FTA was chaired by Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, and the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Europe and the Middle East, Bryant Trick.
Discussions focused on ways to further develop trade and address remaining challenges. Minister Mezzour emphasized Morocco's desire for increased access to the U.S. market for agricultural products, textiles, and automobiles. He also highlighted the importance of overcoming non-tariff barriers.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the progress made under the FTA and pledged to work together to address outstanding issues. The Assistant U.S. Trade Representative welcomed Morocco's role as a platform for American companies in Africa and acknowledged the potential for increased U.S. imports from Morocco.
Minister Mezzour positioned Morocco as a key partner for the U.S. within the framework of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and a gateway to African markets. He emphasized the growing presence of American companies in Morocco, highlighting the positive business climate.
Morocco's Ambassador to the U.S., Youssef Amrani, stressed the importance of the FTA in fostering business ties between the two countries. He expressed Morocco's commitment to further develop trade relations and attract investment.
Minister Mezzour also held meetings with U.S. officials at the Department of State, Department of Energy, and development agencies like DFC and Prosper Africa. He is scheduled to participate in a panel discussion at the Atlantic Council on Tuesday.
