Spain's Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, visited the Mediterranean islets claimed by Morocco on Monday, August 19. After arriving in Melilla, she proceeded to the Vélez and Alhucemas military barracks. According to Iberian media reports, the Minister held discussions with the military personnel stationed at these «points of Spanish sovereignty». Tuesday, Robles will continue her tour with a visit to Isla Isabella, part of the Chafarinas Islands.

These visits by the Minister of Defense follow nearly two months after her department announced plans to equip these islets with new aerial beacon and strategic satellite communication systems.
This program, costing around 600,000 euros, aims to significantly enhance the defense capabilities of the military deployed at Vélez de la Gomera, Alhucemas, and Chafarinas. Additionally, the Spanish Army has installed anti-drone systems on the islets claimed by Morocco, as revealed by El Confidencial Digital last March.
