Morocco took first place at the 2024 African Mathematical Olympiad, held at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 10 to 20.
The national team achieved a total of 201 points, a record that no country has ever reached in the history of the Olympiads, followed by Algeria with 186 points in second place, and Tunisia with 133 points in third, according to a press release from the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports.
Moroccan students won three gold medals and three silver medals. The gold medals were awarded to Yacine Kamouh (42/42 points) from the Casablanca-Settat region, Adam Mahdan (35/42 points) from the Souss-Massa region, and Sami Moussaoui (33/42 points) from the Oriental region.
Silver medals went to Sarah Al-Masnawi (31/42 points) from the Casablanca-Settat region, Sakina Brransi (30/42 points) from the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region, and Lina Chaker (30/42 points) from the same region. All three students also won gold medals in the women's category (PAMO Girls).
The event saw the participation of 27 countries, each represented by a team of six students (three girls and three boys). The students competed in two tests over two consecutive days, each lasting four and a half hours.
On this occasion, the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports extended its warm congratulations to the students who represented Morocco, the supervisors who prepared them for the event, and their families for their support.
