Íñigo Errejón, the former leader of the deputies’ group for the far-left coalition Sumar, has announced his permanent departure from politics. At 40, he has stepped down from his seat in the Lower House and relinquished all his roles within Sumar’s leadership. Following Yolanda Díaz’s resignation after her party’s poor performance in the European elections on June 9, Errejón—once the No. 2 in Podemos—had been seen as a potential successor.
His decision to withdraw from politics comes after allegations surfaced from a woman accusing him of sexual misconduct. In response, Sumar has stated it will «take responsibility», according to party spokesman and Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun.
On November 13, 2020, shortly after the Royal Armed Forces’ operation in El Guerguerate, Errejón expressed solidarity with «the Polisario and the Saharan people», adding, «The Spanish government cannot legitimize this aggression, even through silence».
In September, Errejón also criticized the expulsion of Saharawis, who identify as Polisario activists allegedly persecuted by Morocco and were seeking political asylum in Spain. «This is happening without our consent (...) The Ministry of the Interior must reconsider its decision», he urged during a session in the Lower House.
