The Saharawi Movement for Peace (MSP) has expressed its frustration over the ongoing «war» initiated by the Polisario Front against the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) on November 13, 2020. This sentiment was conveyed in a letter sent yesterday by the MSP's Secretary General, Hach Ahmed Bericalla, to the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura.

Bericalla called for «urgent intervention» to prevent «young Sahrawis from being used as cannon fodder for the Polisario agenda». Expressing sorrow over the recent deaths of several Polisario militia members in FAR drone strikes east of the Sand Wall, he urged the UN envoy «to end what is clearly an absurd war, bringing only human loss, broken families, and an increasing number of orphans and widows».

«It is evident that the peace process has been at an impasse for years and sacrificing innocent young people will do nothing to unblock the political process», Bericalla wrote. He also lamented the «inability of peacekeepers» to uphold the ceasefire.

Last week, approximately 10 Polisario members were killed in FAR drone strikes as they attempted to launch, or had already launched, projectiles at Moroccan positions.

In a statement issued on October 31, following the adoption of UN Resolution 2756, the Polisario reaffirmed the Sahrawi people’s «determination to pursue and intensify their liberation struggle and resistance by all legitimate means, including armed struggle».
