The results of the International Study on Trends in Mathematics and Science Teaching (TIMSS) for 2023 reveal that Moroccan students ranked among the lowest of participating countries in both mathematics and science.

Morocco has participated in this study, supervised by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), regularly since 1999. Conducted every four years, TIMSS measures students' performance in these fields.

TIMSS 2023 evaluated the achievements of students from representative samples of fourth and eighth-grade students worldwide. It also collected data from students, parents, teachers, and school principals, as well as information about national education systems and curricula.

In mathematics at the fourth-grade level, 58 countries and 5 benchmark entities participated. While most countries scored between 400 and 600 points, Moroccan students scored below average with 393 points, ranking 56th.

At the eighth-grade level, 44 countries and 3 benchmark entities participated. Most countries also scored between 400 and 600 points, while Morocco ranked second to last (43rd) with below-average scores.

In science, at the fourth-grade level, 58 countries and 5 benchmark entities participated. Moroccan students scored 390 points, placing 56th, compared to the 400–600 range achieved by most countries.

At the eighth-grade level, 44 countries and 3 benchmark entities participated. Morocco scored 327 points, placing second to last once again.

Educational expert and president of the Amaquen Foundation for Quality Education, Abdennasser Naji, described the results as «catastrophic». In a Facebook post, he remarked, «What is truly frightening about this year's results is that Morocco has fallen by 67 points in the science assessment for the eighth grade, marking the worst result achieved by Moroccan students in over twenty years».

He further noted, «Even more alarming is the percentage of students mastering the minimum competencies in science, which has dropped in middle school from 48 percent to only 18 percent—the lowest recorded percentage among participating countries and the weakest ever in Morocco's previous participations».
