«Morocco hopes that the recent developments in Syria will bring stability, fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people, and offer a better future for the country» said Morocco’s Foreign Minister on Monday, marking the kingdom’s first official reaction to the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
During a press conference held today in Rabat with the former Prime Minister of Kenya, Nasser Bourita stated that Morocco «has always advocated for the national sovereignty and unity of the Syrian people». «This is the kingdom’s consistent position», he added.
Morocco closed its embassy in Damascus and requested the closure of the Syrian embassy in the Kingdom back in 2012, the minister recalled. «Morocco has always been pushing for reforms and stabilization, for the sovereignty and unity of Syria, and for what fulfills the aspirations of the people», he concluded.
Just days ago, the Syrian armed opposition launched the “Deterrence of Aggression” campaign from the north, quickly capturing cities and towns before reaching the capital, Damascus. Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia, where he was granted asylum.
This escape of the now former Syrian president spells bad news for the Polisario, as it has lost the last country in the Middle East that officially recognizes «SADR».
The last official contact between the Polisario and Bashar al-Assad's regime dates back to October 2023 in Geneva, when the Syrian ambassador in Switzerland received a member of the Front. Bashar’s Syria also paved the way, through a Lebanese formation, for the Polisario to organize a conference in June of this year in the Lebanese capital, on the sidelines of a meeting of Arab parties supporting Palestine.
