The Ministry of Health and Social Protection revealed on Saturday, December 14, the results of the investigation into the death of four patients at the Moulay Youssef Hospital in Rabat, denying any connection to a technical malfunction.
In a clarifying statement, the ministry explained that following reports of four deaths at the Moulay Youssef Hospital in Rabat, coinciding with a technical malfunction affecting the oxygen supply channels, a committee from the ministry’s general inspectorate was urgently dispatched to the health facility to investigate the circumstances of these deaths.
The statement indicated that the report concluded that, contrary to reports, two deaths were recorded on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. The first occurred two and a half hours after the malfunction, and the second more than four hours later. This confirms that the two deaths were not related to the mentioned technical malfunction but rather due to complications linked to their illnesses, which had led to their admission to the intensive care unit for more than 14 days and 4 days, respectively.
The report from the committee, which included officials from the central administration, doctors specializing in intensive care and anesthesia, and technicians specializing in equipment and maintenance, stated that the intensive care unit at the Moulay Youssef Hospital Center in Rabat suffered a sudden technical malfunction related to the oxygen supply channels at 10:40 AM on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. This was not due to a lack of oxygen or a power outage at the hospital center as had been rumored. The report highlighted that approximately 40 minutes later, the oxygen supply channels resumed normal operation.
Despite the sudden malfunction, the same source added, the oxygen supply to all patients in the concerned unit continued through the use of portable oxygen cylinders, ensuring the continuity of treatment for all patients.
The clarifying statement concluded, «While the Ministry of Health and Social Protection extends its condolences to the families of the deceased, may God have mercy on them, it reaffirms its commitment to providing high-quality health and treatment services to citizens and informing the public of any updates on the matter».
