The families of victims affected by a blinding injection at Casablanca University Hospital are preparing to take legal action. Their lawyer, Fatima Zahra Aniba, has announced that a civil complaint will be filed against the healthcare facility «in the coming days» to seek compensation for the damages inflicted on the patients. This incident, which occurred in September 2023, has sparked significant concern and outrage.
Speaking to Al3omk, Aniba revealed that a letter will also be dispatched to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, urging them to monitor the condition of those affected. She highlighted that the victims «are in a disadvantaged social situation», exacerbated by the loss of their jobs following the incident. On Wednesday, Aniba met with the deputy attorney general at the Casablanca Court of Appeal to discuss the progress of the ongoing legal proceedings.
Aniba further emphasized the daily struggles faced by the victims, stating that «the affected individuals suffer daily from intense pain and live in darkness since that fateful day». The situation is dire, as some patients «have started to refuse to go to the hospital for follow-up, due to the treatment by some healthcare staff members, but also because of their financial situation».
In response, the University Hospital has acknowledged complications involving 16 patients from the ophthalmology department, following an ocular injection of bevacizumab administered as part of their routine care. The hospital management has initiated a medical and administrative investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the event. However, the patients express frustration over the perceived slow pace of this process, as they await answers and justice.
