Starlink, Elon Musk's satellite internet provider, is in talks with Moroccan authorities to expand its services to the southern provinces, according to Africa Intelligence. The project aims to boost connectivity in the region and reinforce its role as a strategic hub for sub-Saharan Africa.
Negotiations, which began in the summer of 2024, gained momentum during the Qatar-Africa Business Forum in Marrakech last November, where Starlink’s Vice President, Lauren Dreyer, was present. However, the service’s launch remains contingent on approval from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) and the General Directorate of Information Systems Security (DGSSI), which oversee technical and security aspects.
While Moroccan telecom operators fear increased competition, Starlink’s arrival could help bridge the digital divide and provide innovative solutions for residents, businesses, and local institutions. Its deployment is expected to impact multiple sectors, including security, education, and the economy.
