The Spanish government may choose not to commemorate the centenary of its army’s landing at Al Hoceima, which took place on September 8, 1925. This operation marked Spain’s return to the Rif following its defeat at the Battle of Anoual on July 22, 1921.

As the anniversary of what El Confidencial Digital describes as «one of Spain’s greatest contemporary military successes» approaches, the Ministry of Defense appears to have decided to keep this historical episode low-profile.

In response to a query from El Confidencial Digital, the army clarified that «the centenary of the Al Hoceima landing is not included in the army’s specific commemoration program for 2025».

Anonymous sources told the outlet that «the army had indeed planned to celebrate this centenary, considering it a major historical event for 2025. Funds had been allocated for a series of events commemorating the first major joint operation between the army, navy, and air force».

However, according to the Iberian media, Defense Minister Margarita Robles intervened and ordered the cancellation of any commemoration of this military operation «to avoid any action that might offend or upset Morocco», the same sources reported.
