Morocco leads AU consultations on political transitions in six African nations

As the current chair of the African Union’s (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) for March, Morocco launched informal consultations on Tuesday in Addis Ababa with six nations undergoing political transitions: Burkina Faso, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Sudan.

These discussions provided a platform for representatives of these countries—suspended from the AU following changes in their governments—to assess the progress of their democratic transitions and maintain an open dialogue with the continental body.

Mohamed Arrouchi, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the AU and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, emphasized that these consultations align with the PSC’s mandate under Article 8, paragraph 11 of its Protocol, which allows for informal meetings with parties involved in situations under review.

«Our meeting aims to strengthen dialogue with the transitioning states, listen to their expectations, and jointly identify the best ways to promote stability, peace, and their return to constitutional order—an essential condition for their full reintegration into the AU», he said.

This initiative highlights Morocco’s active role in promoting regional stability. It marks a step toward a multidimensional and supportive approach, guiding these nations toward sustainable solutions tailored to their national contexts and regional dynamics.

Through this dialogue, the PSC seeks to identify common ground, enhance inter-African cooperation, and pave the way for the gradual reintegration of transitioning countries into the African Union.
