The National Commission of Medical, Dental, and Pharmacy Students (CNEMEP) has issued an open letter to the Minister of Health, reminding him of the commitments made by his department that led to the agreement ending the strike in the faculties last November. In the letter, made public by the commission, it criticizes the ministry’s «deaf ear», blaming it for delays in implementing the agreed-upon resolutions. The letter specifically highlights the lack of progress in increasing the daily allowances, which remain at 21 dirhams.
The commission also recalls that the meeting resulting in the agreement emphasized the involvement of students in decision-making regarding reforms, to prevent situations of paralysis similar to the one experienced last year. In this context, CNEMEP's letter serves as a warning, mentioning a «potential escalation» in a «climate of worrying tensions» within the faculties of medicine, dental medicine, and pharmacy. Consequently, the commission calls for a «quick, concrete, and responsible response».
When the standoff ended last November, the Commission welcomed an agreement that «largely met the students' demands outlined in their grievance file», based on which they had led an indefinite strike since December 16, 2023, marking the longest student movement in the country’s history.
Throughout nearly a year of mobilization, one of the key demands was the cancellation of a Ministry of Higher Education measure proposing the reduction of medical training from seven years to six.
In accordance with the agreement reached between the two supervising ministries and CNEMEP, decision number 2175.22 on the matter, dated August 4, 2022, and published in the Official Bulletin on March 13, 2023, will not apply to the four cohorts preceding the effective date of this decision.
