King Felipe VI led the Spanish delegation at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. In a speech of about 20 minutes, the monarch briefly addressed the issue of Western Sahara, dedicating barely two lines to it.

Felipe VI stated that Spain «will continue to support the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to reach an acceptable solution, in accordance with standards and within the framework of the United Nations».

Unlike his address in September 2016, the king made no reference to «the self-determination of the Sahrawi people» or to «the organization of a referendum» in the territory. His remarks instead reflect the policy adopted by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez since March 2022, when he formally expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara in a letter to King Mohammed VI.

Just hours before Felipe VI’s speech, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares met with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in New York.
