The French town of Dalhunden, nestled in the Bas-Rhin region, has issued an urgent plea for witnesses following the vandalism of the sole grave in its Muslim section last Tuesday. Mayor Michel Degoursy declared his intention to file a formal complaint, denouncing the act as a «targeted and clearly racist attack». In a post on its social media channels, the town called for witnesses, expressing outrage over what it termed a «heinous act committed in a place of reflection».
Speaking to France 3 Régions, the mayor noted that the vandals «attempted to topple the headstone but did not succeed». The town lamented this act as one that «deeply wounds the affected family and shocks the collective conscience», while also expressing solidarity with the relatives of the deceased. Degoursy further clarified that the Muslim section is not exclusive to a single family.
«These are people who have been part of our community for 20 years. After the father passed away, his widow requested a grave and a Muslim section, even though our cemetery already had Protestant and Catholic sections», he explained, highlighting that «the creation of the Muslim section was unanimously approved by the town council two or three years ago».
The Dalhunden town hall reported the incident to the gendarmerie on Thursday, October 16, as did the family of the deceased.
