Morocco's statistics need evolution for structural transitions says BAM Governor Jouahri

Morocco’s official statistics system, long trusted by international institutions and investors, must continue to evolve and adapt to the country’s shifting economic and structural landscape, said Abdellatif Jouahri, Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), on Monday in Rabat.

Speaking at the opening of a conference-debate marking World Statistics Day, organized by the High Commission for Planning (HCP) in partnership with BAM and the UNFPA, Jouahri stressed that the success of Morocco’s ongoing structural transitions «depends on the calibration of policies and on the ability to monitor their implementation effectively».

He noted that many areas still offer room for improvement, including expanding coverage both geographically, to support advanced regionalization, and thematically, to address information gaps such as household wealth, wage trends, private investment, and climate change. Jouahri also underscored the need to improve the frequency and timeliness of key indicators.

He revealed that BAM had once planned to increase the number of its Council meetings under a more flexible exchange rate regime and inflation-targeting framework. However, «this goal has not been achieved, as some of the data underpinning monetary policy decisions are still produced quarterly or with long delays», he said, emphasizing that «these improvements require collective effort, not the action of a single institution».

«Nearly twenty years after joining the IMF’s Special Data Dissemination Standard, the next step would be to join the select group of countries that have subscribed to the Special Data Dissemination Standard Plus», Jouahri concluded.
