Sweden backs Moroccan autonomy plan for Sahara in line with UN resolution 2797
DR

Sweden has expressed its support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, considering it a «credible basis» for negotiations aimed at reaching a definitive solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2797.

This position was outlined in an official statement released by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a phone call on Monday between Sweden’s Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenengard, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Living Abroad, Nasser Bourita.

With this explicit endorsement, Sweden joins the vast majority of European Union member states, as well as more than two-thirds of UN member countries, in supporting Morocco’s autonomy initiative.

Adopted on October 31, 2025, UN Security Council Resolution 2797 affirms that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most realistic and viable solution to the dispute.
