The National Union of Moroccan Journalists has expressed deep regret over the exclusion of many professional journalists from covering the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, in favor of a large number of social media influencers. According to the union, this decision weakened professional and strategic communication and opened the door to narratives of agitation and doubt surrounding the integrity of the competition.

In a statement on media coverage of the tournament’s 35th edition, the union said this exclusion revealed a genuine shortcoming in ethical and media planning, reviving concerns over the marginalization of experienced journalists from efforts aimed at strengthening national sports media and keeping pace with major continental events.

The union also criticized what it described as the unprofessional haste of certain media outlets that questioned the integrity of the competition and spread unverified allegations, seeking to pressure organizers and preempt sporting outcomes.

It warned that the involvement of media outlets in some countries in such practices reflects a serious departure from professional standards and a dangerous erosion of media independence, driven by political agendas that in some cases turned into hostile rhetoric and incitement. The union pointed in particular to Algerian media as emblematic of these excesses.

At the same time, the union praised the responsible work of several continental and international media outlets, which presented a balanced picture of the tournament and highlighted its organizational and sporting achievements while avoiding sensationalism. It also acknowledged the professional conditions provided by Morocco to national and international media.

Finally, the union commended Moroccan journalists for their coverage of the event and called for stronger professional and institutional support for national media to better counter hostile campaigns and the spread of fake news.
