Known on social media as Chef Kimo, Kamel Laâbi passed away tragically on Wednesday following a cardiac arrest. He was 57. The much-loved chef from Fez had built a large following through engaging videos that helped revive and popularize Morocco’s traditional cuisine.
Chef Kimo was widely admired for his innovative yet accessible way of presenting age-old culinary traditions. His expertise was shaped by years of family influence as well as hands-on experience in the restaurant industry, allowing him to bridge heritage and modern storytelling.
The grandson of Haj Abdelkrim Raïs, a prominent figure in Moroccan Andalusian music and former director of the Arab-Andalusian Orchestra of Fez, Chef Kimo carried forward a legacy of cultural transmission. He infused this heritage into his cooking, seeking to elevate authentic culinary practices with generosity, warmth, and a deep respect for tradition.
