Albares accuses People's Party of «hypocrisy» over Morocco and Sahara policy

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has claimed that the People's Party (PP) sent «envoys» to Morocco to discreetly back Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s position on Western Sahara, despite publicly criticizing the government’s stance at home. Speaking during a parliamentary oversight session marked by a heated debate on foreign policy, Albares urged the party’s MPs to «stop the hypocrisy and the nonsense».

His remarks were directed at PP MP Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, whom he accused of pursuing a dual-track approach toward Rabat. Albares argued that the party cannot be considered «trustworthy» in the eyes of the Spanish public, accusing it of attempting to «undermine» the government’s foreign policy efforts.

Earlier this week, following a meeting in Madrid with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, Albares reaffirmed that bilateral relations between Spain and Morocco are among the strongest globally. He stressed that ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries have never been at such a high level.
