A maritime incident unfolded overnight from Wednesday to Thursday at the entrance of the Port of Casablanca, after dozens of containers fell into the sea, temporarily disrupting port traffic, Le360 reported, citing concordant sources.

According to the same source, the Liberian-flagged container ship Ionikos left the port around 11:45 p.m. after unloading cargo from China. The vessel was exiting the harbor en route to Spain, when high waves cause several containers to fall into the sea near the port entrance. The ship is currently about six nautical miles off the port, at a standstill.

Initial overnight checks by authorities did not reveal any immediate findings. It was only the following morning that Royal Gendarmerie units discovered containers scattered across the port’s access channel.

The shipowner has officially declared the loss of 85 containers carrying various goods, including auto parts, furniture, and other products.

A large-scale response was quickly deployed to secure the area and begin recovery operations, involving a helicopter, five vessels from the maritime gendarmerie and the Royal Navy, as well as tugboats. As a precaution, maritime traffic at the Port of Casablanca was temporarily suspended to assess navigation risks and facilitate the recovery effort.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether sea conditions, cargo securing, or other technical factors were behind the latest incident.
