Journalist and researcher Jamal Eddine Belarbi has recently unveiled his latest book, «The Moroccans of Norway: Migration and Trajectories», providing an insightful look into the Moroccan community residing in Norway.
Published with the backing of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication by Maison Al-Ihyâ publishing and distribution, this work illuminates the notable individuals within this community who have left a significant imprint on the history of a relatively obscure diaspora.
The book is divided into three sections, exploring the early waves of Moroccan migration to Norway and the subsequent generations. Another section delves into the biographies of key figures, utilizing a journalistic portrait style to connect readers with several generations of Moroccans in Norway. These individuals strive to make an impact, celebrating both their host country and their Moroccan heritage.
The preface of this 330-page medium-format book is penned by Professor Abdelouahab Rami, a media expert. He asserts that these portraits «do not shy away from the challenges of the journey, nor do they sugarcoat the harsh realities of integration, or gloss over the issues faced by successive generations in the land of the northern lights». Instead, they aim to humanize the statistics and migration narratives.
The author, drawing from his personal experiences, explains that his focus on this community in Norway arises from his interactions with numerous Moroccans during his tenure as a correspondent for the Maghreb Arab Press Agency (MAP) in the country.
Belarbi notes that Moroccans have predominantly settled in Norway for economic opportunities or scientific research. Through these portraits, readers encounter men and women of diverse ages and backgrounds, building bridges between two seemingly distant cultures that converge in the nuances of daily life.
