One of the two U.S. soldiers who went missing while participating in African Lion, currently underway in Morocco, jumped into the ocean in an attempt to rescue the other, newly released details reveal.
U.S. defense officials told CBS News on Monday that the incident occurred over the weekend near the Cap Draa training area, where a group of soldiers had gone to watch the sunset. One soldier is believed to have fallen into the water from coastal cliffs, prompting fellow service members to attempt a rescue by forming a human chain with their belts, which proved unsuccessful.
A second soldier then jumped into the ocean to save his colleague, who was reportedly unable to swim, but was immediately struck by a wave. Both soldiers struggled to return to shore, leading a third soldier to enter the water. While unable to rescue the two, the third individual managed to make it back safely.
Search and rescue operations remain ongoing, with aircraft, drones, divers, and vessels deployed along the Atlantic coast for several days.
The soldiers were taking part in the African Lion military exercise, which brings together thousands of troops from the United States, African countries, and NATO allies. The incident was not directly linked to the drills.
